About this site

The Teach Sustainability resource sharing hub was developed by the Sustainable Living Challenge Team at the Faculty of the Built Environment, University of New South Wales, Sydney.

The site is designed primarily to support NSW high school teachers but can be used by any sustainability education practitioner. All resources available on this site aim to assist teachers to deliver learning outcomes that increase the capacity of the next generation to create a sustainable future.

The creation and ongoing enhancement of this site has been achieved through the implementation of number of our sustainability education projects including:

• Knowledge Networks: evolving learning for sustainability in schools, a professional development project created to explore pathways for building the capacity for Education for Sustainable Development (EfSD) with in-service high school teachers. The project explored two pathways (i) the development and application of an action learning based professional development model; and (ii) the initiation of an online resource sharing database to support existing teacher change agents (teachsustainability.com.au) This pilot project ran during 2004-2005 and was assisted by the NSW government through its Environmental Trust and developed in conjunction with the NSW Department of Education & Training. • Lessons from Teachers: Teaching and Learning for Sustainability. This project aims to demystify the process of integrating sustainability education into secondary teaching and reinforce the value of peer learning in sustainability education. Through this project a series of 'Teaching and Learning Case Studies' will be produced, providing inexperienced teachers with access to lessons from experienced peers. This project is being delivered from January - November 2008 and has been assisted by the NSW government through its Environmental Trust.
• Sustainable Living Challenge is the peak national education for sustainability program in Australia. It aims to engage young people, their teachers and their communities in the learning challenges presented by sustainable living concepts. The Sustainable Living Challenge was established by UNSW in 1998 (initially as the Sustainable Living Competition) and uses a capacity building approach with teachers and young people, to position the learning process associated with moving towards a sustainable future as ongoing and lifelong. Fundamentally, it aims to recognise the activities of secondary schools all over Australia in tackling the issues of sustainability in their classrooms. The site and our education projects have been designed to complement the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005 – 2014) and the NSW Government’s Learning for Sustainability: NSW Environmental Education Plan.
