Up one levelEach year students and their teachers converge on the University of New South Wales for a day or celebration, stimulation and inspiration! This section contains just some of the visual highlights from the Sustainable Living Challenge Expo & Awards Day each year.
Expo and Awards Day 2006
Hundreds of students and their teachers descended upon the University of New South Wales on the 4th December for the annual Sustainable Living Challenge Expo and Awards Day. Over 800 students attended the action packed awards ceremony, hosted by Mike Kerry and Mel from Channel V . The trusty house band 'The Compostibles' debuted there latest release ‘Soul-ar Power’. Peter Garret also dropped in via a live video link just before awards were announced. Students were entertained and educated with workshops provided by Questacon, UNSW, and the Powerhouse Museum. They also browsed the impressive array of project profiles in the largest ever exhibition of Sustainable Living Challenge projects.
Expo & Awards Day 2005
Over 800 students travel from around Australia for the 2005 Sustainable Living Challenge Expo and Awards day... Hosted by the Faculty of the Built Environment, it was the usual mix of informative lectures, an exhibition of outstanding projects and the extravaganza that is the Sustainable Living Challenge Awards Ceremony. The ceremony this year was attended by students, teachers and program partners and was compeered by Con Sumer and Bozone Layer from VOX Bandicoot with support from the house band ‘The Compostibles’. The event was entirely carbon free being powered by renewable energy courtesy of Green Power and Randwick City Council.
Expo & Awards Day 2004
This year started with workshops for all on various topical issues relating to sustainable living: "Renewable energy for a cool planet – tackling greenhouse issues” , "Water – our waste and a resource wasted”, “Designing for a sustainable future”, “Inventing our future”. At the conclusion of the workshops and reception, everyone came together for the Awards Ceremony hosted by Roise Beaton from Triple J and Ben Roche from the Sustainable Living Project. The ceremony was a departure from previous years, with an informal format focusing on highlighting the stories from current and previous years participants, whilst relying on musical support from the house band - 'The Compostibles'.
Expo & Awards Day 2003
Finalists, students, teachers and parents from all over Australia gathered at UNSW for the 2003 Expo & Awards Day. Attendees learned about sustainable living with workshops from Questacon, International Young Professionals Foundation, NSW Dept of Agriculture and MC Stingray, as well as displays from key environment and sustainability organisations. Hosts Jabba and Mike Kerry from Channel V, were accompanied by guest speaker Professor Stuart Hill entertained the crowd with his hilarious and inspiring introduction to sustainability (for the record he did do the spilts with a wig on!) and MC Stingray had the audience jumping with his 'Shoutout for Sustainability' written especially for the occasion.
Expo & Awards Day 2002
More than 500 students from across the country gathered at UNSW on 3rd December 2002 for the announcement of the winners of the 2002 Sustainable Living Competition. This year included interactive displays from 20 key organisations, celebrities such as Adam Spencer (JJJ) and Mike Kerry (Channel V), live performances and an impressive exhibition of student projects from a solar dog house to a water powered reverse osmosis device for water filtration.
Expo & Awards Day 2001
The Sustainable Living Competition Annual Awards and Celebration Day was held on 4th December 2001 at The University of New South Wales. It was a very successful event with over 450 students attending- as well as special guests Adam Spencer (Triple J), Ian Kiernan (Clean Up Aust) and some of the stars from Home and Away. Students enjoyed a range of environmental seminars, performances, student plays, music, bbq and the Wheel of Eco-Fortune game run by the guys from Home and Away.
Expo & Awards Day 2000
Students and their teachers came to UNSW's award winning Scientia building for the 2000 Expo & Awards Day. It contained a range of stalls and exhibits ranging from solar energy to designing with computers. Adam Spencer for Triple J hosted the event with special guest Ian Kiernan and Tong Wu (Dean, Faculty of the Built Environment). Students also attended workshops at the UNSW Ecoliving Centre on composting and spent their day avoiding fines from the Eco Police.
